First steps

  • Check every door and the trunk release
  • See whether someone can bring the spare key
  • Check whether your insurance or roadside plan covers lockouts
  • If a child or pet is inside on a warm day, call 911

How locksmiths open cars

Most cars are opened with an inflatable wedge to make a small gap and a long-reach tool to press the unlock button or pull the handle. Done properly, it leaves no marks. Coat hangers and screwdrivers are how doors get scratched and seals get torn.

Spotting a scam

  • A very low phone quote that balloons on arrival
  • No clear business name on the invoice
  • Insisting on drilling or replacing the lock straight away
  • Cash only, with no receipt

Ask for the estimate before anyone comes and confirm it before work starts. California locksmiths are licensed by the state, and you can ask for the license number. More tips in the truth behind "best locksmith" claims.

Frozen or stuck door locks

Rare in Woodland Hills but common on mountain trips: a frozen lock. Warm the key in your hand or use a lock de-icer; don't pour hot water on the lock or glass. If the lock still won't turn, it may be worn, which is a job for a locksmith.

Prices

Automotive lockouts start at $19.00 plus the $29.00 service call. If you need a new key, see car keys and fobs.
