Locked out of a file cabinet? Your options

File cabinet keys are tiny and easy to lose, and the cabinet usually holds the paperwork you need today.

Why cabinet locks fail

Most cabinets use small cam or plunger locks. Keys go missing, cheap cylinders wear, and drawers jam when the lock bar bends. Forcing a drawer often bends the frame and ruins the cabinet.

How a locksmith opens it

Many cabinet locks can be picked or decoded. Others are removed and replaced. A locksmith can usually cut a key to the existing lock or fit a new one so all your cabinets share a key.

Higher-security options

For cabinets holding personal data, checks or medical records, ask about high-security cam locks with restricted keys. Pair them with a key log so you know who has access.

Safes are different

Safes are built to resist entry. The price list notes that safe unlocking starts at $85.00 and involves damage, so the safe won't be usable afterwards. Ask about options first. See lock emergencies.
