Apartment and home lock changes: when it's time

Old locks fail in two ways: they get easier for a burglar to open and harder for you to open. Either is a reason to change them.

Outdated locks

Older, cheap locks can be vulnerable to techniques like bumping and picking. If your deadbolt is decades old or the brand is unknown, an upgrade is worth considering.

Corroded and sticky locks

Corrosion and dirt make locks stiff. A lock that needs force to turn is a lockout waiting to happen. Servicing helps, but badly worn locks should be replaced.

For landlords

Changing or rekeying locks between tenants is basic security. After an eviction, have the paperwork ready; the locksmith will need to see that the change is authorized.

For renters

Talk to your landlord before changing a lock. Most leases require the landlord to keep a working key.

Cost

Basic lock changes start at $25.00 plus the $29.00 service call and the new lock. Installing a lock where the door has no hole starts at $85.00. See prices and rekey or replace.
