Lock repair: signs your lock needs attention

Locks rarely fail all at once. They warn you first. Catching those signs early is cheaper than a lockout.

Warning signs

  • The key needs jiggling or force
  • The deadbolt won't fully extend into the frame
  • The latch doesn't catch when the door closes
  • The handle is loose or wobbly
  • A keypad lock responds slowly or not at all
  • A sliding door latch won't lift or engage

Common causes

Dirt and dust in the cylinder, worn pins, a door that has dropped or a strike plate that's out of line. In offices, high-security electronic locks also need servicing to keep working.

What repair involves

Cleaning and lubricating the cylinder, adjusting the strike plate, replacing worn parts, or fitting a new cylinder. If the lock is beyond repair, replacement is the answer.

Cost and warranty

Lock repair starts at $19.00 plus the $29.00 service call. The published warranty on residential and commercial lock repair is 30 days. See the price list.
