Warning signs
- The key turns stiffly or only at an angle
- The remote unlocks some doors but not others
- The cylinder spins without unlocking
- Visible corrosion around the keyhole
Reasons to replace
Weather and grime wear cylinders out. Older cars often have simple locks that are easy to defeat. And if a key was lost or a former partner still has one, changing or rekeying the locks is the only way to know who can get in.
Repair, rekey or replace?
A sticky lock may just need cleaning and lubrication. A lock that works but has too many keys out there can be rekeyed. A damaged or broken cylinder needs replacing, ideally matched to your ignition key so you still carry just one.
Dealer or locksmith?
A mobile locksmith can often do the work where the car is parked. Ask for an estimate that includes parts. See roadside automotive services.
